Chapter Thirteen
The Rangers had about an hour to get ready for the incoming counterattack as the Saur began to figure out, by reports of runners running to and from the various junior commanders streaming off the ships, and of course the black smoke boiling out of the smoked command post in Dockside where the Ranger choice to deal out the GFC had just gone down, that they were under attack within their own controlled space.
Two galleys pushed off from their mooring points as signals were exchanged and tried to make for the boom chain. The snipers made short work of the crew sending shots at the helmsman and then the replacements that were sent aft to take control of the wheel. Eventually we guessed people stopped volunteering to steer the ship from the place where peopleâs heads kept turning to red mist.
Within minutes, both galleys were caught up in each otherâs oar banks and adrift within the harbor waters among the other moored war galleys. A fire started on one and the order to abandon both ships seemed, according to the spotters, to be given as Saur slipped into the water easily, sans weapons and armor. The remaining sailors fought the spreading fires and eventually abandoned, leaving the slaves belowdecks to go down with the ship.
In seconds three Flotsam orphans were aboard, coming out of the water in ways a Navy SEAL would have envied just a little. Small and dripping wet, knives out, the urchins headed belowdecks and a few moments later ragged prisoners now freed were streaming out of the dark holds and leaping into the water to clutch oars, if they could not swim, or swimming away from the port and toward the eastern arm of the harbor, aiming for a strand of sandy beach called Little Pharos. It was a long swim across the harbor, but that had been the designated point for the rescued to shelter out of harmâs way as both forces did battle inside the city to see who got the say-so regarding all things going forward.
The Rangers had decided it would be them.
If you would have asked me, it seemed we were already off to a great start with the assassination of the enemy GFC and getting the first two boatloads of slaves to safety. But of course, in every game, including games of death, the enemy gets to make their moves and what the sergeant major had said about every plan never surviving contact with the enemy started to earn its reputation as being true way more often than not.
Sergeant Monroe was now staged in the alleys between the north end of Dockside and the hammerhead isthmus where the Rangers were wasting Saur patrols as they swept in. Gunfire was not suppressed at this time because we wanted the population to get nervous and get out of Dodgeistan before the gunfight at the Ruin Corral really started up.
Within minutes, First Squad, under command of the captain, was storming the fabled Lighthouse of Thunderos with breaching explosives that shattered the morning quiet across the bay.
